The Quest for the Perfect Valentine’s Day Design
In this week dedicated to love, I challenged myself to create a special pair of earrings for Valentine's Day.
Why did we choose a lotus rather than a rose:
I wanted to transcend conventions and offer something unique, far from the classic rose theme often associated with this period. This is how the idea of incorporating a lotus into the design was born.
The lotus, with its elegant petals rising gracefully above the water, symbolizes love and purity in many Asian cultures. Unlike the rose, often used in Western symbols of love, the lotus offers a fresh and original perspective, while maintaining a deep and universal meaning.
Its connection to eternal love lies in its ability to rise above troubled waters to bloom in all its beauty. This powerful metaphor resonates with the notion of enduring and unalterable love, making the lotus a perfect choice for this special Valentine's Day creation.
Thus, the gold-plated lotus becomes much more than a simple decorative element in these earrings; it embodies the very spirit of eternal love, offering a touch of originality while remaining true to the tradition of Valentine's Day.
Prototype 0, Creation of the Lotus
The process began with the careful design of a wax model, sculpted with passion to preserve every detail of the rose. This lotus, far from being a simple flower, must have been a work of art in brass. Each petal carefully sculpted, seeking to capture the very essence of eternity.
The Elegance of the Leaf Nail
The choice of the top stud wasn't just artistic, it was a careful exploration to find the perfect balance in the design of the “Eternal Rose” earrings. Here are some key elements that brought this piece to life:
Modern Floral Inspiration:
Escaping the expected simplicity of a conventional rose or sleeper closure was essential. The inspiration turned to a delicate leaf, in keeping with the lotus, thus evoking a modern and refined harmony.
Ingenious Artisanal Achievement: Simplicity has not sacrificed originality.
Using the delft earth technique, each leaf has been created with artistic flexibility. When unforeseen circumstances arose, the possibility of cutting the leaf shape from silver foil, soldering wires to give the ribs, then hammering everything together to obtain a domed shape, was considered as a creative solution.
Delicate Balance:
The creation was not without its challenges. An error on the size of the ring at the end of the sheet was corrected behind the scenes. Although invisible behind the leaf, it remains essential for the connection with the lotus.
Playful Note:
A humorous wink has been added to the design of the Erosia earrings. Inspired by a suggestion between the craftsman and his mother, the leaf idea was presented with a hint of mischief. The idea that love and sex go hand in hand, symbolized by Greek statues with their fig leaves hiding private parts, brought a mischievous touch to the creation. This leaf, although not an attempt at concealment, adds a subtle note of humor to the whole, while remaining consistent with nature.
Aesthetic Coherence:
The choice to use the same gold plating for the leaf and the flower guarantees visual consistency. Despite its small size, the leaf brings a touch of elegance without overshadowing the majesty of the lotus.
This minimalist design is inspired by Greek concepts while bringing a contemporary touch to the creation. The leaf, although small, plays an essential role in the overall aesthetic balance.
Leaf vs Tear – The Crystal Dilemma
The next step was the choice of Austrian crystal. Initially drawn to a teardrop-shaped crystal, my plans were disrupted when it turned out that the reference was no longer available from our supplier. A detour among around ten alternative references followed. The Helix Drops, with their particular size, captivated my imagination, bringing a unique dimension to the reflections.
And we also found another teardrop-shaped crystal, allowing us to offer two different Austrian crystals. This diversity offers our customers the opportunity to choose their favorite crystal from the helix drop or teardrop versions, adding a personal dimension to their experience with our Erosia earrings.
The Subtle Elegance of the Cultured Pearl: A Delicate Quest
Introducing a cultured pearl between the delicate rose and the Austrian crystal proved to be a delicate and challenging undertaking. Far beyond a simple question of bead size and thread choice, it was a careful exploration of subtlety, aiming to preserve the desired visual harmony.
During the first attempts, the idea of using a half-drilled pearl was an option considered. However, the budgetary reality of this creation quickly surfaced. Purchasing a cabochon would have exceeded the financial limits we had set for this project. Faced with this constraint, we made the decision to maximize the use of our existing resources.
We therefore opted for a half-drilled pearl that we had in stock, initially intended for another creation. Although this approach represented a budgetary saving, the result did not completely meet our quest for subtle elegance. The thread remained slightly too visible, disrupting the harmony we were trying to achieve.
My Mother's Ingenious Inspiration
It was at this point that my mother's creative mind intervened, providing an innovative solution that would solve our dilemma in an ingenious way. This solution, developed from the experience of our amethyst and rock crystal multi-strand bracelet, proved to be the perfect finishing touch for our gold-plated earrings.
The Eternal Lotus Comes to Life
So, with the introduction of my mother's ingenious solution, the complex puzzle of the Erosia Earring found its final piece. Every detail painstakingly crafted during this passionate exploration of craftsmanship brought to life a unique creation. The story of this earring transcends the simple manufacturing process: it tells a saga of love for art, determination in the face of challenges, and inspiration that comes from all corners of life.
But why the name “Erosia” for these earrings?
The choice of name draws inspiration from Greek mythology and the goddess of love, Eros. By associating this divinity of love with the creation of a piece symbolizing the eternity of this love, we wish to evoke the timeless power of feelings. In addition, by adding the suffix 'ia', we seek to feminize and personalize the name, thus giving these earrings a unique and captivating identity. Thus, 'Erosia' embodies both the essence of eternal love and the timeless grace of femininity, making these earrings much more than simple accessories, but true symbols of affection and elegance .
